Principal's Message

Latona Elementary is nestled in the beautiful hillsides of Montecito Heights overlooking downtown Los Angeles and just minutes from the 110 Freeway. Latona Elementary offers many experiences for its students. Our school offers Early Transitional Kindergarten (ETK) through Sixth Grade classes. We have a culturally diverse faculty and our staff is bilingual in Spanish and Chinese. Staff members have an average teaching experience of 19 years. We offer small class sizes and personal attention to our

students. Latona Elementary offers several programs in addition to the regular curriculum. We provide LA’s Best and East Youth Services (EYS). We maintain an Integrated Arts Program that gives students an opportunity to participate in music, drama, visual arts and dance.  In addition, we have a computer lab that gives our students access to technology and supports their work on 21st Century skills. Our sixth grade classroom offers a computer to each student integrating computer based assignments facilitating interesting and collaborative project based learning.

Latona believes in supporting all students in their learning and future. We differentiate instruction to support English Learners. Our gifted students receive instruction that meet their needs. We have a Scholars Club that gives students opportunities to work on projects involving depth and complexity, collaboration and communication through debates.

Our school provides numerous opportunities for parents and community to be involved in the school. Some of the activities that we have throughout the year are Back to School Night, Family Movie Night, Monthly Coffee with Principal meetings, parent workshops, Career Day, Read Across America, Mother’s Day Event, Fall Festival, Winter Holiday Performance Program, talent show, college visit for parents, and UCLA partnership.

Partnership With All Stakeholders

Latona teachers value students’ achievement and success. Our staff has over 200 years teaching experience in every grade including middle school, high school and adult education. Our faculty’s diversity ranges from background and experience as well as languages spoken, such as Spanish and Chinese. We believe in tolerance, perseverance and in the idea that all students can learn.  The community we serve is our second family we have had generations of families educated and return with their children, creating a tradition we at Latona are proud of. Our experience extends from former a Peace Corps Volunteer, Banker, Ocupational Therapist, Masters of Curriculum and Instruction, National Board Certified Educator, and even a former Mural Artist. It is through these experiences that our staff works diligently to support and create an atmosphere that is welcoming, creative civic minded and nurturing to all students. Latona’s teachers work closely and collaboratively with the after school staff. Afterschool staff supports students with homework help, interactive activities and sports. All of our staff maintains a collaborative relationship with all stakeholders; students, parents and community members. This ensures that the entire learning community is working collaboratively towards the same goal, which is successful students, families and citizens for the 21st century.
